Social anxiety stems from intense fear and distress when you need to be in a social situation (or anticipating being in a social situation). Often the concern is that you will be scrutinized, judged, humiliated, or judge yourself. These judgements can often be about performance, such as in public speaking, eating in front of others, fear of saying something 'stupid" or ' ill stumble over my words',or using a public restroom, being ''on a team' in a work/school situation. Often the physiological sensations such as blushing, rapid heartbeat, sweating, shaking, and can advance into panic. Many people see their world shrink as they avoid social situations such parties, meetings, having a conversation or ordering at a restaurant. Individuals often miss out on opportunities for advancements at work, school, and relationships due to avoidance. This goes beyond 'being shy' and can cause a profound impact on your life. It is not unusual to have depression as social anxiety can have a great impact on your life.
